Harmony Lab
What We Do
The Harmony Lab brings the joyful vibrancy of music to the multidisciplinary makers-space that is Express Newark. Through its transparent walls, students and community members can be seen and heard deeply engaged in the process of exploring their creativity through music. This inspiring space fosters the development of musical skills necessary for authentic self-expression in organized sound. Music, a uniquely intuitive and emotional science, creates an invaluable sense of harmony among all people, regardless of culture, race, or gender.
The Harmony Lab is equipped with high-quality audio/video equipment, music production capabilities, and several individual workstations, including state-of-the-art Yamaha digital pianos. Musicians of all levels gather in the Harmony Lab, free of charge, to learn, exchange ideas, compose, practice, or simply find a creative respite from daily challenges. It serves as a teaching studio for Rutgers University students and a vital community resource, offering open access for professional musicians, local organizations, and cultural exchange.
Who We Are
The Harmony Lab is a welcoming and inclusive space for musicians and creatives of all backgrounds. It is home to collaborative programs such as Harmony Hangs, where professional musicians gather to share ideas and concepts, fostering artistic cultural identity. We also partner with organizations like NJPAC’s Jazz For Teens program and the Barry Harris Foundation, which presents its iconic Barry Harris Workshop bi-weekly in our space, free of charge.
The Harmony Lab is often uncurated, allowing dreamers from the community to acquire skills and opportunities to sing the truth about our world. Filled with music, singing, learning, and laughter, the Harmony Lab is a place that musicians can truly call home.
