Paul Robeson Galleries

What We Do

Through the addition of the Express Newark galleries: the Box, Window, and Main Galleries, as well as purpose built arts studios, workshops, and storage, the Paul Robeson Galleries has expanded its offerings: curating museum quality shows, artist-in-residence programs and extensive workshops for all ages. The Paul Robeson Galleries strive to continuously uphold Express Newark’s third space vision of a community-centric cutting edge, arts and educational experience.

Who We Are

Named for esteemed political activist and Rutgers University alumni, the Paul Robeson Galleries began in 1979 in the Campus Center as a student collaboration and have grown to be a network of galleries across the Rutgers University-Newark. The PRG mission and programming embody Robeson’s life-long commitment to unfettered artistic freedom, cultural democracy, and transnationalism. This mission is carried out in the presentation of visual arts exhibitions, gallery education and other public programs, and in partnerships with community organizations.

The Galleries continue to have a deep relationship with the department of Arts, Culture and Media, mentoring students in the curatorial process, educating them about museum practice, exhibiting graduate student work and facilitating partnerships between Newark artists, faculty and students. The Galleries’ mission is to encourage visual literacy and artistic expression, and does so through partnerships with artists, the university and Greater Newark communities.

Paul Robeson Galleries does not charge an admission fee.
