What We Do

Adhering to their mission of accessibility, FDS helps to capture the vision of designers, educators, researchers, manufacturers, amateur inventors, and the overall curious through the use of 3D modeling, scanning, and printing technology. The cost to bring these ideas to life is often an obstacle to institutions and community residents alike. FDS works to create access to technology that allows for university-community expression through collaboration.

FDS is a 100% Mac studio equipped with 16 workstations and a wall mounted digital monitor, outfitted for lectures and demonstrations. Within FDS is Form Design Lab—a secondary classroom and workspace that houses digital fabrication machines, production materials, and specialized tools. The lab boasts state-of-the-art 3D printers, a laser etching machine, and digital scanners available for use year-round.

Who We Are

A hub under the Arts, Culture, and Media department, Form Design Studio and Lab (FDS) were created to provide accessible instruction and guidance through cross-disciplinary collaborations that uphold the university-community inclusionary model at the core of Express Newark’s mission.
