The Third Space
Express Newark opened its doors in January 2017. Together with Newark artists and arts organizations, faculty, staff, and students from Rutgers University—Newark conceptualized Express Newark as a “Third Space” where everyone communicates on equal footing works in tandem to incubate talent, cultivate engaged scholarship and promote social practice.
Express Newark’s open and welcoming ethos is codified in our logo – a cubic form that is read as open and welcoming space when the letter “E” and “N” form two of the sides of the cube. There are three colors in the logo to represent how the university and community come together to make the “Third Space” or simply stated: 1 + 1 = 3. We recognize that together we are better – we are greater than the sum of our parts.
With a focus on arts, entrepreneurship and social justice, Express Newark houses a variety of university and community partners. We offer many opportunities for collaboration: college courses, internships, workshops to the public, and artist residencies. All of these efforts are supported by access to arts spaces, and state of the art equipment. Through many mediums Express Newark strives to highlight Newark’s rich history and cultural assets.
Express Newark produces an Arts & Culture podcast hosted by Former Express Newark Director, Dr. Fran Bartkowski. You can find the podcast on your favorite podcast listening platform, or by visiting our site on AnchorFM.
